About Saadani

The Saadani is a National Park in Tanzania in the provinces of Pwani. The park was established on 01.01.2005 and covers an area of 1.1 km². The Saadani offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The park is about 100 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam and 100 kilometres south of Tanga. It is the only park in East Africa with a stretch of beach on the Indian Ocean. And the only place where a beach swim might be interrupted by an elephant strolling by or animals coming to drink at the nearby waterhole. The Swahili fishermen casting their nets at sunrise are also a special sight.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Saadani is the Grassland savannah.

Mangroves dominate the landscape and the idyllic, palm-fringed beaches as well as the waterways are lined with forest. Part of the extensive Zaraninge Coastal Forest, a biodiversity hotspot in Tanzania, is also within the park boundaries.

The climate in Saadani is tropical. The rainy season takes place from Beginning October to End May The dry season first extended over the months from Beginning June to End September inclusive. The best time to tour is Beginning January End February.

The proximity to the equator and the location on the coast of the warm Indian Ocean causes tropical climate conditions. There are two rainy seasons. The "long rainy seasons" and the "short rainy seasons". Thunderstorms are common in the afternoons during the rainy season, but it rarely rains all day. Average temperatures remain high throughout the year.
