About Niassa

The Niassa is a Private Game Reserve in Mozambique in the provinces of Cabo Delgado. The park was established on 01.01.1954 and covers an area of 42 km². The Niassa is a Big Five reserve and offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The park borders the Rovuma River in the north, which also forms the border with Tanzania, and is part of the Selous-Niassa ecosystem and connected to the Selous Game Reserve by a so-called "wildlife corridor". It is the largest nature reserve in Mozambique and the third largest game reserve in Africa. Without fences, it borders the Nyerere National Park in Tanzania, so the animals move freely in this huge area.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Niassa is the Wetland.

Half of the reserve is Miombo forest, which makes it one of the largest Miombo areas in the world. The rest of the landscape is open savannah, with some wetlands and isolated patches of forest. The landscape is dominated by the Lugenda River and huge granite domes.
