Mashatu

Botswana Central District Private Game Reserve

About Mashatu

The Mashatu is a Private Game Reserve in Botswana in the provinces of Central District. The park was established on 01.07.1890 and covers an area of 0.29 km². The Mashatu offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

Located in eastern Botswana on the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, the reserve is one of the largest private reserves and part of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Only three of the "Big Five" live in the park, excluding rhino and buffalo, but elephant and leopard sightings are unparalleled. The exclusivity of the reserve, with a very limited number of vehicles on game drives, ensures quality sightings. This is even more so due to the sparse vegetation. The distance to Johannesburg Airport is approximately 523 km.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Mashatu is the Savannah.

The reserve comprises a diverse wilderness of savannah, riverine forest and wetland. Most striking are the sandstone cliffs and dry riverbeds frequented by herds of elephants in search of water. The majestic nyala berry tree or "mashatu" found along the rivers provides shade and food for a variety of animals.
