About Mana Pools

The Mana Pools is a National Park in Zimbabwe in the provinces of Mashonaland West. The park was established on 01.01.1975 and covers an area of 2.196 km². The Mana Pools offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The park is situated near the northernmost point of Zimbabwe, close to the Zambian border, about 15 km north of the Harare-Lusaka highway. The nearest towns are Chirundu on the Zambian side and Kariba. It borders Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park on the opposite side of the Zambezi River. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is best explored by canoe or on foot. Four of the Big Five are represented here.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Mana Pools is the Floodplains.

The landscape is shaped by the changing water level of the Zambezi. There are riparian landscapes, islands, sandbanks and pools. Drier areas are covered by a forest of mahogany, ebony, baobab and wild fig. The river and the flood plain are bordered by steep cliffs.
