About Katonga

The Katonga is a Private Game Reserve in Uganda in the provinces of Western Region. The park was established on 01.01.1998 and covers an area of 0.21 km². The Katonga offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The reserve is located about 200 road kilometres west of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It was named after the Katonga River, which flows mainly from the swamps southwest of Lake Wamala towards Lake Victoria in the east. Katonga is a little-known, low-key wildlife reserve. Efforts to better protect the park against poaching are slowly reviving the animal population. There are no roads for vehicles, so the park is best explored on foot.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Katonga is the Rainforest.

The park is situated on the edge of the Katonga River Valley and the vegetation is mixed savannah with acacia scrub or woodland. Much of the reserve is either permanent or seasonal wetland. There are also areas of riverine and tropical forest.
