The main habitat of the Ithala is the Lowveld.

The reserve encompasses a wide variation of terrain, from densely vegetated river valleys and lowveld to sourveld, high grassland plateaus, ridges and rock faces. Ithala Game Reserve is a place of rugged beauty with rock formations 300 million years old.
