The Gorongosa is a National Park in Mozambique in the provinces of Sofala. The park was established on 23.07.1960 and covers an area of 4.067 km². The Gorongosa offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.
The park is located north of the city of Beira and in the southern foothills of the Great African Rift Valley. It borders the Rio Púnguè in the southwest. Gorongosa was once one of the best parks in Africa, but was abandoned and deprived of wildlife during the civil war. Since 2008, a lot of money and effort has been put into rehabilitating Gorongosa. Although the park is far from fully recovered, it is once again a viable destination for wildlife. There is a whole range of wildlife, including elephants and a variety of antelopes.
