About Gombe

The Gombe is a National Park in Tanzania in the provinces of Kigoma. The park was established on 01.01.1968 and covers an area of 0.052 km². The Gombe offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The park is located in western Tanzania and not far from the border with Burundi. It is one of the smallest reserves in Tanzania. Gombe is one of the best places in Africa to see chimpanzees.

Highlights

Landscape

The main habitat of the Gombe is the Woodland savannah.

The landscape is characterised by steep mountain slopes and river valleys and the dense vegetation changes from tropical rainforest to sparse miombo woodland to moist grass savannahs at higher altitudes. Gombe is located on the shore of Lake Tanganyika and can only be reached by boat.

The rainy season takes place from Beginning November to End April The dry season first extended over the months from Beginning May to End October inclusive. The best time to tour is Beginning July End October.

Daytime temperatures are around 26°C, at night it cools down to around 16°C. Unlike the coastal areas and the northern parks, Gombe has a continuous rainy season from November to April. It rarely rains all day, but thundershowers can be expected in the afternoon.
