About Central Kalahari

The Central Kalahari is a Private Game Reserve in Botswana in the provinces of Ghanzi District. The park was established on 01.01.1961 and covers an area of 52.8 km². The Central Kalahari offers the possibility of self-drive safaris.

The reserve in the middle of the Kalahari Desert is extensive and stretches from the south and west of Botswana to South Africa, Namibia and Angola. It is the largest reserve in Botswana and here you can still find untamed wilderness. The harsh desert environment does not offer a great variety of safari animals, but wildlife sightings are special in this arid landscape.

Landscape

The main habitat of the Central Kalahari is the Grassland savannah.

The landscape is flat almost everywhere, with a mixture of bushes, sand dunes and some larger trees. Many of the river courses are fossilised into salt clay plains. In the rainy season, the dunes turn a lush green.

The Central Kalahari has a hot desert climate overall and experiences a distinct dry and wet season. In the dry season, warm clothing is recommended for early morning drives - especially from June to August. The desert climate is strenuous during this time, as average daytime temperatures are 33°C. Only in the early morning hours can it get cool for game drives. In the rainy season, the climate cools down with occasional showers.
