The service, especially of the kitchen Team was amazing. They cooked lovely dinner and breakfast. Unfortunately the place itself looks like it could use a deep clean and the rooms are outfight dirty with dead insects behind the bed and in the lamps.

Horrible experience, I will never recommend anyone to go that place, even after we raised our complaint with the owner Sue, she was never apologetic and never even asked what they need to do to improve the service instead she was very defensive, that infuriated me even worse. The place is dry, dirty pool, old furniture, doors don't open properly, there was no hot water when we were there, couldn't even take a shower, we immediately left in the next morning. I booked for 2 nights and and only slept for 1 nights, I want my refund for 1 nights, I wasted my money and time visiting that place, drove 4 hours for nothing!

My wife and I stayed 2 nights in self-catering for R1800 (~$180) in the middle of the summer. The room was a little rondavel (round hut) with 1 king sized bed, 1 small closet, 2 bedside tables (one of which was broken and kept falling over), 2 lamps (one of which was broken and would not turn on), and an ottoman. There was no aircon but there was an overhead fan which shook very noisily. There were 2 twin mattresses sitting on the floor when we arrived. When we told them we don't have 2 kids and don't need the mattresses, the lady told us to just move them to the side and ignore them. She did not bother having them removed. Considering how small the hut was, there was no extra room for 2 unnecessary mattresses. We were not given a key so we asked for one and were told that, because we were in the bush, a key was not needed. I understand there is less crime in the bush than in a big city, but there are other people staying at the "lodge" that I can't speak for, that are likely from the city. Obviously keys existed for our room because there was a lock on the door and a lock does not come without a key. But they still refused to give us one. There was a pool that seemed nice but was so poorly maintained and dirty, you could not see the bottom, even where the steps were. It would have been really nice to be able to enjoy the pool, as it was the middle of the summer and our small room was very stuffy. There was 1 bathroom to share between 4 rooms. The toilet barely flushed. The shower was not even in the bathroom but outdoors, in public. The bath was cheaply repaired and dirty. The staff were obviously not at all attentive to the self-catering accommodations. We were even told that the common area, which was actually fairly nice, was only available to us between 15h00 and 18h00 because we were only staying in self-catering. We spoke with 2 other families staying at Shikwari who were just as frustrated and disappointed as we were. My wife and I were just there to do some hiking and were not looking for a luxurious hotel to stay in, but for R1800 this place was a huge rip-off. There are many places to stay inside Kruger National Park that are similar, except with aircon and sometimes personal and private bathrooms, for only R250-R500. Therefore I would not recommend staying at this lodge to anyone at anytime.
