The Rebublic of Mauritius is a 2040 km² island nation in East Africa in the Indian Ocean and is known for its lagoons, reefs and white sandy beaches. The seat of government is in Port Louis and the system of government is a unitary parliamentary republic. In Mauritius live 1.3 people (as of 2020), most of whom belong to the ethnic group "Indo-Mauritians".
The official national currency is the "Mauritian rupee" (MUR). The three spoken languages (official languages) are Mauritian Creole, Bhojpuri and French. The vast majority of the population professes Hinduism.
As on many other isolated islands, the fauna of Mauritius is not particularly rich in species. Nevertheless, Mauritius has a high proportion of endemic species. A highlight is the Black River Gorges National Park in the mountainous interior, which boasts rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife such as the flying fox.
